Over the last two weeks we held the world's first ever game jam for GameMaker Studio 2! Over 50 excellent games were submitted, built over the course of the two weeks with the overarching theme of Arena. Now finally we can announce our winners! Games were judged on a wide variety of merits from presentation, to gameplay, use of the theme and GameMaker Studio 2's features. Without further ado, the winners are as follows!
Decay, by @CapsizedMoose
Conceptually and mechanically straight forward and simple, yet masterfully executed. This is a classic top down arena shooter polished to a mirror shine. Control an angry tooth fighting against sources of decay and calories. Fantastic artwork, animations, effects and game feel.
Forager, by @_HopFrog
Forager has a huge amount of polish, quality and great game feel for a game built in just two weeks. The game is about collecting resources, survival and building things with those resources in order collect even more resources, similar in feel to games like Factorio. The game procedurally generates its world and makes excellent use of the new tilemap features in GameMaker Studio 2. An excellent entry well worth checking out, take a look at the source code to see how HopFrog built his game world and learn many other great techniques!
This adorable, animal based, football game was a clear standout among the entries. The game is fast, fun and simple and great to play with friends. But the amount of content built for this game in such a short space of time is a testament to what GameMaker Studio 2 can accomplish. Several different playable characters to build your team from, built in team flag and even theme song creation tools and if that weren't enough they also managed to fit in online multiplayer!
There were a ton of excellent games submitted for this jam and judging was difficult. Here are a host of other standout entries that are worth checking out!
The top 3 winning entries will each receive a goody bag filled with GameMaker Studio 2 goodies, and for our first place winner we'll also be throwing in an engraved trophy to immortalise their efforts in the world's first GameMaker Studio 2 jam!
Don't forget that a requirement for this jam was to submit your project source code! You can take a look at any of the entries to learn how they accomplished what they did with GameMaker Studio 2, and it such a short space of time. We want to thank everyone who took part and built a game for BetaJam, and to let you know that this only marks our very first competition with GameMaker Studio 2. More competitions, jams and prizes await for our developers in the near future! Stay tuned for more soon.
