Space Mods: Holiday Community Competition

We are excited to announce our holiday community GameMaker developer challenge, the Space Mods Competition. Following our GMS2 tutorial, 'Space Rocks' we are asking you to create a recognisable modification of Space Rocks. Open to anyone aged 16 or over, our Space Mods Competition tasks developers to modify and improve upon the Space Rocks game created in the tutorial using any version of GameMaker Studio 2. The winner will be the best overall game meeting the criteria, as decided by the YoYo Games judging panel.
The winner will be given the choice of selecting a GMS2 licence from Desktop, Mobile, UWP, Web, as well as the game being featured on the GameMaker Showcase! All entries should be submitted by midnight on 2nd January 2019 UTC. We will be monitoring social media and we hope you share your progress and finished games with the hashtag #GMSpaceMods so that we can share them with everyone!
Rules and objectives
- To modify and improve upon the Space Rocks game created in our tutorial, using any version of GameMaker Studio 2
- The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over
- The submission must be made with GameMaker Studio 2 using any licence, including the free trial licence
- The game must be a recognisable modification of Space Rocks with a focus on playability
- The winner will be the best overall game meeting the criteria, as decided by the YoYo Games judging panel
- All entries should be submitted via email by midnight on 2nd January 2019, UTC
Help & Other Info
- How to export project file: Inside GMS2 you can export your .yyz file by navigating to File -> Export Project
- How to capture video: OBS or other screen capturing software can be used to get video of your project (they can then be uploaded to social media!)
- How to make gifs: GifCam is a great tool for making gifs of your game
Some Judging Guidelines:
- Must be made in GMS2 with any licence (including the free trial)
- It must be a mod, not a new game
- GameMaker functionality used
- Playability and engagement
- Great presentation and style
Submission Terms & Conditions
- Submission must include exported project file (.yyz)

Space Mods Competition – Terms and Conditions
These terms and conditions (the ”Agreement”) constitute an agreement by and between yourself (“You”, “Your” or “Participant”, accordingly), and YoYo Games Ltd (“YYG”). This Agreement is supplemental to the YoYo Games Platform User Agreement entered into between You and YYG “License Agreement”). In the event of any conflict or inconsistency between this Agreement and the License Agreement, this Agreement shall prevail with respect to the subject matter hereof. You and YYG may also be referred to herein individually as “Party” and collectively as the “Parties”.
1. The Competition
YYG is holding a holiday competition in which YYG Platforms (as defined the License Agreement) users are required to recreate, modify and improve the Space Rocks game created in YYG’s tutorial (the “Game” and “Developed Game”, respectively), available at https://www.yoyogames.com/blog/485/make-your-own-arcade-classic-with-our-new-tutorials (the “Competition”). The Developed Game must be a recognisable modification of the original Game, with a focus on playability and strong engagement with the players.
2. Participation criteria and Competition Rules
a. In order to enter the Competition, You must use a version of GameMaker Studio 2 license (“GMS2 License(s)”). For the avoidance of doubt, all types of GMS2 Licenses are eligible for the Competition, including the free trial licenses. All GMS2 Licenses are available at https://www.yoyogames.com/get
b. Competition is free of charge, and open to any person aged 16 or over.
c. Only one entry per person is permitted.
d. Creation of the Developed Game: You must recreate the Game by watching YYG’s tutorial available at the link provided in section 1, and try to modify and improve it as herein described.
e. The submission of the Developed Game must be made as an attachment to an email, in the format of .yyz, sent to firstname.lastname@example.org , by 12pm, 2nd January, 2019, UTC (the “Closing Date”).
f. The winner of the Competition shall be the user that creates the best Developed, as determined by YYG judging panel, in its absolute discretion.
3. The Winner and the Prize
a. The winner of the Competition (the “Winner”) shall win one GMS2 license of his choice, from the following options: GMS2 licence for Desktop, Mobile, UWP, or Web (the “Prize”). The Winner shall also be announced in GameMaker Showcase, and on YYG’s pages on Facebook and Twitter. The announcement in GameMaker Showcase will also include a featuring of the Developed Game.
b. The Prize (i) personal and non-transferable, and (ii) cannot be exchanged for cash and no other alternatives will be offered. In the event of a Prize being unavailable for any reason, YYG reserves the right to determine and substitute a prize of equal or greater value at any time, without notice.
c. The Winner will be selected and announced within two weeks, following the Closing Date.
d. The Winner shall be notified by email (“Prize Notification”).
e. Prize must be accepted in the manner set out in the Prize Notification. In the event that any Prize Notification is returned as undeliverable or a Prize-winner fails to validly reply to a Prize Notification within 28 days, or rejects the Prize, YYG reserves the right to disqualify the Winner and select an alternative Prize-winner in accordance with the Competition Rules above.
4. Withdrawal or Disqualification
a. YYG reserves the right, in its absolute discretion, to disqualify any Participant for any breach or non-compliance with the competition rules listed herein, this Agreement, the License Agreement and/or any other applicable laws, without providing prior notice to that effect.
b. In the event that the Winner is disqualified from the Competition, YYG shall select an alternative Prize-winner in the same manner as the original Winner and such selection will be subject to the terms hereof.
5. Your obligations:
By entering the Competition, You hereby represent and warrant that:
a. All information submitted by You is true, accurate and complete. YYG reserves the right to verify any information contained in your entry and/or your eligibility to enter the Competition;
b. You are over the age of 16;
c. You shall comply with all laws applicable to this Agreement;
d. You shall not select or use as a username a name of another person with the intent to impersonate that person;
e. You shall not use as a username a name subject to any rights of a person other than You without appropriate authorization and or, use, as a username, a name that is otherwise offensive, vulgar or obscene;
f. You are solely responsible for the activity that occurs in Your account, and for keeping Your account password and login credentials secure. You may never use another person’s user account or registration information to enter the Competition, without permission;
g. You must notify YYG immediately of any change in Your eligibility to participate in the Competition, or breach of security or unauthorized use of Your account.
6. Publicity and data protection
You hereby acknowledge and agree that YYG, and any third party authorized by YYG, have the right to publish the Winner’s name on both YYG’s internal and external websites as well as in any other activity, for promotional purposes. YYG has the right to use, reproduce, publish, display, transmit, copy, amend or store the Winner’s entry worldwide for such promotional purposes, and for the purposes of the Competition.
7. Disclaimer and Limitation of Liability
a. YYG accepts no responsibility for any damage suffered by any Participant (person, organization or company) resulting from participating in the Competition, including any damages that may be suffered as a result of using the Game and/or developing the Developed Game.
b. YYG accepts no responsibility for entries lost due to computer error in transit.
8. Governing law and jurisdiction:
The Agreement will be governed by the laws of England and Wales. The Parties agree that any claims, legal proceedings, or litigation arising in connection with the Agreement, will be brought solely to the courts of London, England, and the Parties consent to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts.
