Illegal Communication Review

Pros: Excellent atmospheric graphic and sound style, subtle, yet beautifully difficult puzzles.

Cons: Very difficult, frustrating at times, could have been longer.

Illegal Communication

Illegal Communication is a game in which you have to be dedicated to it to find the essence of its greatness, I was dedicated, and discovered why Illegal Communication is a great game.

When you first open the game up, an error screen appears, explaining an apparent computer error that says that there has been an "illegal communication," and the computer plans to "deploy defense orbs" to counter this error. You play as one of these "orbs" that must go find the error and dispose of it. However, this explanation is only assumed from the information given, the game never tells the player its true reason or meaning, and that is what makes it so unexplainable.

In playing the game, you must discover what to do all on your own. This gives the game a puzzling feel that is essential to the game's mysteriousness. It can be very difficult at times, and even if you discover the secret to progress, executing what you have discovered can often be even harder. I expect that many will be thrown off by the fact that the game is very difficult. Beating each part of this game takes skill, and this is something that many programmers have strayed away from. Many are making games that are very easy and simple, but this game defies the convention by being complicated and hard, but with this complication comes great rewards.

The game is played with the mouse, which can make the game difficult at times for many who would normally expect use of the keyboard for this type of game. Yet, the mouse is utilized to its full potential in this game, you even control a platform character with the mouse later in the game. The programming for the mouse is excellent. The orb does not just simply follow the mouse's position, but moves as you move your mouse. What is meant by this is that the orb moves in the direction of the mouse's movement, rather than just following the point that the mouse is at.

Even though this is against the game's convention, I will explain about how the game is played, since it is necessary to write a comprehensive review. You play by moving the green "defense orb" with your mouse. You must navigate through flashing green mazes that include many unexpected puzzles along the way. The rest of the game is inexplainable, and I will not try to.

Illegal Communication has a certain atmosphere that has rarely ever been seen in today's games. The game is designed to be "retro." The music and graphics give the game a mysterious feel to it, which may make the player forget the real world and believe that the game is all that exists.

A good word to use to describe my experience with this game is, awesome. At first glance, the game could simply be described as "cool", but as I kept playing the game it started to become very "interesting", but then after I beat the game and the whole experience was over with, I noticed that the game I had just played... was "awesome".

What is the essence of the game's greatness you ask? Why not discover that for yourself. Beat the whole game (it wont be easy) and you will discover why Illegal Communication is a great game.
