Forterez 1.5 Review
By Creative Pixels on 26 August 2007

Pros: Quick Paced and Original, Graphics are Stunning.

Cons: Most Text in French, Lacks Menu or tutorial, Chaos becomes to much to control.

Brilliant game with some big flaws

EDIT: Some aspects of the review are now obsolete, current verdict: THIS GAME IS GREAT.

The idea is simple enough. Make a castle, and protect it. Gameplay issues can make the game too difficult or confusing to enjoy.

Graphics:
With screenshots, it's needless to say they are beautiful. Carefully constructed and animated, these sprites seem to be of commercial quality.

Sound:
Unforchantely there is no music or sounds. I'd recommend using abient (is that how you spell it?) sounds like birds chirping and crikets. Then fade in intense music when enemies arrive.

Gameplay:
Swarms of enemies will slowly make their way to your castle, and try to destroy it. You simply click on an enemy to destroy it. It seems like a frezy battle of click and kill. I found it confusing that there was no "Play Mode" and when in build mode it is difficult to kill enemies when you have a large brick floating on the cursor. Also, the fact that most of the text was in french didnt help ethier. I know french, (im not that good) and it is difficult to read it when enemies are attacking. There is a great need for a pause button. But the game is exciting, I must also add that the radar and time of day effects greatly increase the game value.

Story:
There really isnt a story. But some explanations would be nice. I just guessed that when all of my castle is gone I would lose, perhaps their should be some sort of treasure you need to protect in the middle.

Interface:
The game interface looks mostly nice. The menu effects really worked well. But you need some sort of tutorial that explains the game better and gives you playing tips. Also a menu with save files and such would be nice.

Over all, I really liked the game, and has alot of potential. Perhaps in future versions you can hire soldures of your own, and use them to defend the castle. If the game was a little less hard, and easier to play, we could have a real winner here!

Ahh good job! I like this game. As I began to play it more, I take back some of my more negative comments about difficulty... It's a pretty nice game!

Hey, thanks for the review !
Units controlled (or at least created) by the player are definitely confirmed (though they'll be pretty hard to program). I'll put sound and music when I get back to my old Macintosh (I'm currently on holidays far from home, and my music software is on my other computer). The Pause function is ready and it works well, I'll put it on the next version when you build stuffs ! Also, saving will be added when it's worth saving a game, and there WILL be a story.
