seiklus Review

Pros: Great visual style and music.
Cons: Virtually no sense of real gameplay. Felt myself easily bored with the game from the start. Unclear objectives for collected items.
Highly acclaimed? Or highly overrated?
So I decided to give the highly acclaimed GM classic "Seiklus" a shot, considering it's often in YoYo's Top 10 and even has its own Wikipedia article. As I watched the game intro I was expecting this to be the next Cave Story, but after a few minutes into the game my anticipation melted into boredom. While the game itself is visually impressive, it feels like little more than a tour of the graphical world. There really isn't much to do aside from moving and collecting colored orbs and the occasional item that offers no explanation to its use. As a result, many objectives are vague and you end up with items that you aren't really sure if they helped you or not. This style of gameplay feels too passive, and almost borders on not being able to qualify as an actual "game." (I learned in a game design class that there are two forms of entertainment; active and passive. Games are active while animation and film are passive forms, since you don't really interact. As a general rule, games are NOT supposed to be a passive form of entertainment.)
Visually, this game is great, albeit minimalistic in design, but with a style of its very own. The music is also a very strong point, although I could have done without that repetitive tone that kept playing in the volcano area. Even though the creator of the game didn't actually make the music, he chose nice selections. Perhaps if I were high on mushrooms I could immerse myself in the visual splendor of the game enough to forget about how painfully boring it played, but I wasn't. Perhaps if the puzzles and enemies in this game weren't so few and far between to the point of being virtually non-existent, it would have a little more value as a game... But sadly the only puzzle I noticed was a piano-like series of platforms in a cave, and the only enemies being the virus-like entities inside of the biological area.
I did manage to collect all of the colored orbs and 15 of the hidden white orbs, but I'm oblivious as to where the remaining 50 green orbs are and I really don't have much motivation to find them and finish this game.

It's an exploration game.. It gives you the most flexibility of what you want to do.
