OLD Super Mario Bros. Update 8 Review
By Jglag on 22 August 2007

Pros: -Plays just like the original. -Sounds, music, and graphics match the original perfecty.

Cons: -Not original at all. -The story is the same...

Here We Go!

Our favorite Italian stalion is going back--way back, to his original form. Its Old Super Mario Brothers! The game plays almost idetically to the original in terms of gameplay, but many of the levels are different, giving old mario fans some more platform adventure to take part in. And now for the breakdown:

Graphics:
The graphics are exactly like the original game, which looks very NES (how to describe this?). While not stunning of course, it is not made to be and therefore is good for what it is, although its obvious that 98% of everything was taken straigh from the original game. That's about it.
*** 3/6

Sound:
The music is mario music, no more no less. The sound effects are just like the original and are good. Once again, not much else to say about this.
**** 4/6

Gameplay:
It feels like mario and plays like mario, which would be the only thing right for a mario remake. While the first level is almost identical to the original, the levels begin to vary, just adding to the fun of the regular Super Mario Brothers. Really, there's not much difference from playing mario on your NES emulator except for the fact that the levels are different.
**** 4/6

Story:
Well, the classic story I guess: Save Princess Toadstood--again. She really needs to learn some independence...
** 2/6

Interface:
The controls are just like the original and the gravity and physics feels very natural. The opening is especially neat where you must walk through the doors and then jump through the hole in the wall to enter the retro mario world. Nice job.
**** 4/6

Overall:
This game is great for fans of the original, and just adds new levels for a new challenge. Its not original though at all, obviously, so the score can only be so high; yet for a remake it is great and a must try if you like Nintendo's mascott.
**** 4/6
