Boxy Review
By ControlledCritic on 26 September 2009

Pros: A lot of levels, there are mini-games

Cons: Graphics, repetetive music, no cool sound effects, too hard, tedious gameplay, bad level design.

A Very Dull Game

Hello people! Here's my review:

Let's start with the first thing you see. The graphics. You play as Boxy, a red box with eyes and a mouth. You are not the only box in this game, however. Actually most of the environment in this game consist of boxes. This looks rather dull, and the creator tries to make it less dull by changing the color of the boxes everytime you enter a new "world". Personally I don't find this very creative or more appealing at all. So how do you die in this game? You can get shot, walk into spinning saw-like things and guess what? By falling on spikes. Apart from the spikes being real uncreative and a big target for your frustration in the game, they mix up with the already mentioned boxes and make the game look like a "geometry eductational game". I'm not saying that it is such a game, because that would be waaay, waaay, far off. This is the kind of game that would classify as a "trial & error early 80's platformer game". Unless you like that, then this game is bad. Also, there are very few animations and that just makes the game look even less appealing.

I found the music to be OK, but really repetetive. Also I miss the cool sound effects that should have been in this game. I have nothing more to say about this.

Ok. So how about the gameplay? Well. There are many levels, and there are mini-games should you get tired from playing the game (you will be tired from playing it). However, neither the many levels nor the mini-games are good enough to make up for any damage the frustration playing this game causes. Most of the jumps you have to do in this game require precise timing, luck, knowing what's going to happen, and being able to navigate in the air while making the double-jump (of course dodging all the spikes and other obstacles while doing this).
Your goal is to reach the end of stage and advance to the next level, until you've completed the game. This involves jumping over and under spikes, dodging lasers, fires, flying saw-things and pressing buttons (and "fighting" bosses). You're often supposed to press a cretain amount of buttons in order for walls to disappear, so that you can reach the end of the level. Of course, your first instinct is to press all the buttons, so that all of the walls disappear, but uh-oh. You shouldn't do that. Why? Because this game has a ridiculous layout of levels and sometimes pressing a button that makes a wall disappear can kill you or make it impossible to reach the end. Very frustrating.

I didn't care much for the story, but it wasn't good anyway. Something about Boxy being teleported to the "Color Dimension" or something like that. His goal was to get out of there, I think. The story is only mentioned in the beginning and in the end, so there's not much to follow. The ending is quite predictable, too.

The interface was, well nothing special. But just to show that this was it's best area, I put 3 stars on it. It worked fine and did it's job. It could have looked a little nicer, but I have no complaints about it's programming or layout or whatever.

Overall: 2/5 stars, mostly for having a lot of levels.
