The Legend of Zelda: Trapped in the Dark World Review

Pros: Feels almost exactly like a Zelda Game... namely, the original.
Cons: If you have an old version, you may be subject to several gameplay hindering glitches. A very cruel one being the Mirror Shield glitch. But just update and you'll be fine.
Amazing.
Okay, first up is your graphics. We have a game here with tons of different sprites an objects, most very easily recognizable. Even alone these normal graphics would have probably been enough for full stars, but you took it further. From the Pyramid Background at the top of death mountain to the explosions when you defeat Ganon, you really brought in the extras.
You had a very big assortment of sound effects. About every Zelda sound effect I could think of was included. And then there were things not from Zelda, such as the Temple Catacombs music (Super Metroid I believe), Level 8 (Mario and Lugi: Superstar Saga) and the Dark Abyss (Kingdom Hearts tutorial) Even if these tracks aren't used in the same way they might have originally been made, the edits to them make them extremely suitable to the situation. There were also many great tracks that were from the Zelda series, the Maze musics I especially liked. And, whenever you boot the game up, it gives the impression that this is your masterpiece, and it is, so far.
The Gameplay was like most Zelda games but also very different in the item selection. The originality is a good thing, but in your game I see versions of older items that don't work as well as the old version. (Rocs Feather to Ladder, Lantern Opposed to Blue/Red Candle) It was probably in best interest for you not to use the old items, because the graphics set is a Ocracle/Link To The Past set, and these items didn't appear. They also would have made your game too easy. Whenever you get an item in this game, you play around with it for a while, unless you know the obvious effects. For the majority of the game, the player would do well to keep the hookshot on at all times until they got the hammer. And after the hammer Light Arrows get to shine, eliminating the problem those pesky 30 enemy rooms (including respawning) used to pose. There were spots that seemed like goodies that were definitely not goodies. An example is the rocks that were too suspicious... I tried bombing them once, and then I came later trying to Super Bomb them, and nothing happened. Mountain+Double Rock formation=Goodies. Almost always.
Your story, although you executed all the text fields perfectly (especially Ganons personality) was seemingly unoriginal. When I really thought about everything you did though, with the story and the map progressing with each other, and the perfection behind Ganons lines, the game had enough uniqueness to get the 5th star. Others may not give it to you though, because the whole story isn't exactly original. However, in my eyes, it would be extremely hard to have a unique story involving Ganon, yet you did in a way that like most Zelda games, creates an inconsistency in the past somewhere but still remotely fits. Figuring out the Zelda timeline is indeed impossible, I don't even think the creators know at this point XD
Yeah, you were right, the safe feature DOES get annoying. However there was a solution to that... it's called "Continue without Saving" useful for whenever you lost in a dungeon but made no progress. The ability to switch through the items with A and D was a very nice solution to the problem I've seen when only one button rotates the selection, but even better than the double rotation would have been an item screen you could pick off of from... I wasted a Red potion trying to create the cave to death mountain, the CAVE! The menu screen, although you couldn't select anything, was pretty easily deciphered. (The left row is Attack, Block, and Defense, the Middle 2 items, the far right items you don't select, and the far far right are temporary items) And it's always nice to know what the heck your looking at, otherwise you would not understand the game very well. Your F1 help screen was pretty nicely informing, and I'm extremely glad you included credits (although you had to space out who you gave credits to to make it a decent length :] )although there was an error with the credits. Kingdom Hearts is not Nintendos property. That song in the Dark Abyss is not from Nintendo. It's a good song though.
Basically your game is amazing. It has a much greater feel of Legend of Zelda than Zelda: A Link to the Past though. I could recognize about all of the dungeon layouts, besides the inside raft feature. That was unique. But there were a lot of gimmicks only in a Link to the Past, the game just feels more like the Legend of Zelda. Still, it's worth 5 stars. You fixed most of the errors I encountered anyway.
