Super Mario Bros: Shine Expedition Review
By MacflyX on 23 April 2009

Pros: Great gameplay, lots of different powerups and Yoshi!

Cons: Nothing major...

A shiny game...

Mario must retrieve 80 shine sprites to make a force field around the kingdom and protect it from Bowser. The kingdom will then be safe forever. Great. At least, Peach was not kidnapped again... He must also recover blue coins to advance through the game.

The game provides interesting features. The powerups include the Mushroom, the Fireflower, the Frog Suit, the Tanooki Suit, the Hammer Bros Suit, the Bomb Suit and Yoshi (and also others). I especially like Yoshi. He can't eat everything but he can eat a lot. :) Also, Mario can pick up some enemies and throw them. There are some mushroom blocks he can pick up too but they do nothing but blocking path. They can't be used against enemies. Oh well... Also, in each level, Toad will host a little quiz in order to win a shine. Interesting but it's a little long to wait for text to show up (especially when we have a wrong answer and have to pass the whole quiz again).

About gameplay, there are a few rare irritating things like when Mario hits the ceiling while jumping, he stops and falls straight down. Mario just have to jump lower. Particularly in the doomship level, when Mario is near an enemy, he gets killed (or lose his power) even if the enemy is not touching him. Is there a little problem with the collision there? I also find that Mario jumps too high when he jumps on an enemy but most of Hello's games work this way. We get used to it. About powerups, flying with the Tanooki or Raccoon is hard. Hitting a wall will stop Mario from going up (probably intended). Other than that, great gameplay.

The soundtrack and sound FX suits well the game. I like them. The interface is well done. I like to have the shine and blue coins count in each level. The game difficulty is average but in some areas, if Mario is small, it gets hard quickly.

What else to say? Excellent game, Hello! Loved it!
