Sonic Dash Review
By TD on 03 May 2007

Pros: Challenging levels, great music, original sprites, surprising ending

Cons: The engine isn't very accurate, sound effects could be better, an error at the final level

A great game with some flaws

When I visited this site for the first time, this was the 3rd game I've played. (The other 2 were Mario games which were quite nice.) I thought: would this Sonic game look the same as mine? Well, I've read some comments and I've checked out the first review and I thought it wouldn't. But still I was quite excited to see a home made Sonic game.

The 3 minutes loading time mentioned in the first review seemed to take only 30 seconds on my pc, which isn't too bad I think. After that I got on the title screen and I could choose between Sonic and Shadow. For some reason I've chosen Sonic. (When writing this I wonder if the ending would be different if I had chosen Shadow...) I entered the first zone which should be located somewhere above an ocean. That's probably the reason why this zone is called "Ocean highway". And it's definitely worth his name because Sonic still has the ability to run at an unbelievable speed and it doesn't change when you explore the 6 challenging levels. Yes, you read it right: Sonic Dash is challenging. Very challening.
This is because there are a lot of enemies. Sometimes even a little too many. But that's not the only reason of course. Instead of just throwing some objects to run over in the room, the levels are created very precisely. I never had the feeling of "this was a trap I could never evade without being there before".
The bosses are created pretty well too. It was fun to see some of the original sprites with new actions and moves, but I really loved the two final battles. But euhm... I guess something went wrong when creating the final battle. First of all the window becomes a lot smaller and when you run out of lives (which seemed not to be visible anymore) you'll get an error. I simply ignored this error and I could try again.

When speaking of mistakes, I noticed the Sonic sprites doesn't always change when they have to. Luckily this doesn't affect the gameplay. But it looks like Sonic can't run slowly like he could in the original games. But who cares about that? I may not forget this game has been created by only 1 person, not a team like it used to be. The gameplay is good enough to stay motivated to complete the game. (At least for me.)

When I listened to the music I noticed I have some of the tunes by myself. I guess the creator found them on the same website as I did? No complaints about that, the music is great. The sound effects are not that great...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like that the sound effects have been recorded with some tape recorder which has been held by the speakers of the television. If you want to do this again, I suggest you buy a digital video camera and connect it to your game console. (This is an expensive way to rip sound effects, but there are cheaper ways too. (I used the expensive way.))

Overall, this game is definitely worth downloading. Maybe the graphics could be better as well (I would have chosen the original Sonic sprites instead of the new ones since all the other sprites are from the first games too) and since the game isn't full screen (anymore) I wouldn't change the resolution of the screen. And before I forget, maybe you can find a way to let the rings scatter around when you lose them so you can get some of them back, because now it doesn't matter how many rings you have. If you lose 1 ring or 50 rings, they are all gone and you'll have to find new rings to protect yourself.
But still, I enjoyed (almost) every second of it and I would like to thank firesean73 for creating this great Sonic game! I hope to see a sequel in the future...

Ps: I hope my English isn't that bad... :) (I'm from Belgium.)
