Forest Temple Review
By Yal on 07 March 2009

Pros: MUSIC! (I would write sereval ! marks, but that would make me sound 'noobish')

Cons: Slow gameplay. On certain levels one can trap oneself.

I presume it's your first game?

Since I got myself a memberhood in Yoyoreviews, my review-making popularity has really swooned. But this isn't about me, it's a full-scale revieweration of a game formerly known as Saria and the Forest Temple, or SAFT for short. A platformer leaping from OoT in basis of story, but can it match up the greatness of this former glory? Not that I'd say anything can match OoT, except Final Fantasy IX perhaps. But, I must judge the game on its own qualities, there are some to point it out.

Graphics: 3 / 5
Some are really good. Saria's sprite to start with, and all the kinds of Skulltula spiders. BUT! Saria does not possess a climb animation, and she even appears behind some ladders. This is a pretty ugly overlooking, I'd say. Also, it's impossible to see wether the Faroe's Wind shots are wind, or not random streaks of green spray paint... And the normal, green brick-block-like sprites, as well as a few more, does not live up to the great level of e.g. the back grounds. And a few other things, like showing Score in the main window using a nifty draw event, would also improve the graphical bit.

Sound: 5 / 5
I... I'm speechless. Pure wonderfullity.
Induces feelings, loops correctly, what more do you need? It's even signed Koji Kondo!

Gamplay: 2 / 5
This is where the shoe is beginning to fit on the wrong shoe. The gameplay is a bit slow, a bit repetitive, and the Faroe's Wind is not neccesarily making things better. What if you had to push a crate (which BTW is a rectangle with a C on it...) at the same time as you had to fire Faroe's Wind? Using two buttons to push a crate, by the way, felt... lame. And on the level with the first... was in a Lizalfos?, I managed to fall down, and I had no more wind, and couldn't get up again because of that. ANNOYING in one fashion. The gameplay would feel a bit better if it was speedier, perhaps with a ♥♥♥ health like in Zelda games to make more room for mistakes on each life? Also, it would be nice if Saria had some means of attack BEFORE the final boss, perhaps by hurling Deku Nuts at the enemies to stun them?

Story: 2 / 5
It is explained in the F1 help file, and it does not affect the game play, nor is it deep.

Interface: 3 / 5
The Magic left for casting Faroe's Wind is called 'Score' and is drawn on the window border. No comments
... or, well, let's just say it would be nicer if it was called Magic and drawn in the window. And if it was drawn as a magic bar, it would also be a nice improvement. The controls feel good, but having to use two buttons at the same time to push crates feels unneccesary. And using the mouse to cast, is also a bit dodgy... but it works pretty well, so no bad thing to say there. The controls was smooth, too.

Overall Rating: 3 / 5
It is visible that a lot of effort has been placed in this game. But the game doesn't make itself memorable after quitting playing it. If you have the patience to let it load twice just to play it, have a go. But I'd reccomend you to play my games instead -_^
