Plaxis Review
By Yellowsoft on 07 July 2007

Pros: The graphics look very 8-bit, which is good; considering it's a tribute to classic arcade games, The sound effects and music are very good; Highly non-linear; The interface makes it look even more like an arcade game; Most importantly, it's FUN!

Cons: Uh... No story?

Fast, Fun, and Addictive

Before I start my review, I would like to talk about my frustrations with the rating system YoYo games uses. I'm fine with the six-star ratings, but I just can't get over how "Story" is one of the rating components. I mean, since when have games been REQUIRED to have a good story??? Since never. Don't get me wrong, stories in games are good, and they can make a good game great, but that doesn't mean that games have to have a story! So, why don't they get rid of the Story Rating, and put in something more important, like length.

One example of games not needing stories in order to be good is this one, Plaxis. It's a tribute to classic arcade games, so of course it's not going to have a story. Or, at least, not a good one. The goal in plaxis is to collect all the rings in the level. Sounds simple, huh? Well, yes. It is simple. But, there's a time limit, which means you cannot waste any time in some of the later, more complex levels. There are also some obsticles, like enemies (blue ones you can kill, red ones you cannot) locked doors in which you'll have to find a key for, and to top it all off, you can't get all the rings at one time. You can only get about half of them. The others are transparent, so you'll have to find a button that makes the others not transparent. But by doing so, you make the ones you could get transparent, so get all the rings you can before pressing that button!

The brilliant gameplay coupled with some excellent level design, you'll be hooked for hours. Well, at least I was. The graphics and sound really just make it feel just like an arcade game. The game even stores your highest score, mine being over 40,000. It has an attract mode, and just about anything you'd expect from an arcade game. So since I really don't have much more to say, I'll just wrap it up. Plaxis is a simple yet fun game that just about anyone can enjoy, and if you don't agree, then you're stupid. Or not. But I think that this game is seriously under-rated. So, uh... Good job!

Thanks for the review! On the topic of story lines, I will note that Ms. Pacman does have *somewhat* of a story -albeit a short and rather corny one. As for being underrated... well, it's my only game to have been accepted at Independent Gaming. I consider that a bit of an accomplishment.

Thanks again.
