Purple Review
By n0bel on 01 July 2007

Pros: Extremely polished and professional graphics, lush effects, very cute atmosphere & characters, high immersion, beautiful chip-like music, challenging yet addicitive.

Cons: So far no storyline (WIP).

No hole in this fabulous lining!

PURPLE really can only be criticized as being too flawless, and while the demo is considerably short, you'll savor every awesome second of this superb, eye-candy coated goody bag.

The first aspect anyone will notice are its crisp, colourful, fun pixel-graphics. The game hosts a variety of clever, personified characters, and I do hope more will be on the way. _Bowser_ has also managed to incorporate lovely effects in response to almost every possible action, and I especially like the 'dying' transitional effect; however the red filter sort of edged away from the cutesy atmosphere.

Audio shines parallel to the game's graphics. There is a sound accompanying every effect/action/goings, and alongside graphics, this means that there is always something moving or making a sound within the view, making immersion one of my favourite experiences with the game. The background chip-tracks are well composed and fit perfectly well with the in-game environments/situations, and the tonality altering when running out of time is also a splendid touch.

I'd also like to comment on the simple choice of controls and direct, clear interface. Controls are cliche, using <^V> to move and Z, X for actions, but easy to pick up on, and have some pretty interesting effects, too. Probably the most innovative feature about this is the player's weapon of choice: a frisbee. Holding X will increase the frisbee's distance and you can try to evade it's swift reutnr and result in some interesting physics driven devestation to block's and enemies. Kudos on the idea to solarise the hud's text outline when faced with black, too.

Gameplay in PURPLE, seems quite strange in that while you are pressed for time, you just can't help stopping to admire how well crafted the levels really are. The difficulty is moderate at first, which may seem demanding, but you'll have guarateed addictiveness on replaying the level. Other than that, straight platforming cliche's with genius level design.

On a finishing note, I'd like to suggest for the final version that _Bowser_ should make the storyline serious, yet still attain light-hearted characters, and to maybe add some power-ups to the damn fine frisbee. So far, this amazing game gets 6 shiny strawberries /6.

Wow, thank you for the long review! :)
I added control changing for the next demo... and yes there will be many powerups and yoyos :)
Like a jetpack, a laser gun with ammo (I think I will make the character will fire it from the red ball on his head!) and many types of yoyos (homing yoyo, fireball yoyo, yoyo that goes through walls).

There will be a story, I already came up with an intro... when I upload the progress site, i'll post some new screens and info :)

Thanks again!
