PipeDreams Review

Pros: Simple style, easy to get into, polished interface, addicitive, love the "messages", Jukebox mode

Cons: Sound effects and background music are a little weak

A simple idea well presented

PIpedreams is undeniably a simple game BUT it is very well presented and looks smooth and has obviously had a lot of time spent on the polish.

I was a little shocked to see that the author is expecting (hoping??) that people will pay to play such a simple game - but after discovering that the fee to register the game is only $1.99 (which is well less than my daily cup of Starbucks) AND the game has obviously had a lot of love spent on it I think it's quite fair (and actually a bit of a bargain).

Getting back to the game, the basic premise is very simple, but like all good simple games is quite addictive, I particulary like the way the graphics and background continually change and you never get the same combination of puzzles and graphics twice. It was quite a nice surprise to see the inspirational messages appear every three levels, I don't know how many of these there are but again after a significant amount of playtime I kept seeing ones I'd never seen before.

A word of advice, THIS GAME IS HARD! I would definately suggest playing through the tutorial and practice modes a couple of times before attempting even the easy mode as you'll often find yourself running out of time before you solved the puzzle. However once you get "the knack" of solving the puzzles the levels start to become more and more interesting (and hard mode is very aptly named!)

Now for the bit's I didn't like, although the sound effects are just passable, the background music could do with being a lot better, I suppose it's difficult to get good music to fit the style but even so.... On the plus side however I was very impressed with the Jukebox mode - basically it allows the player to "turn off" the in game music (which I'd probably do anyway) and replace it with their own MP3's or playlists, this really makes a difference to the game and playing some ambient MP3's whilst doodling through the "endless" practice mode is a sure fire way to pass some serious time.

All in all, I like the game - it could have been better in parts, but for the bargain price tag of $1.99 I feel it's value for money - and even if you don't want to pay, the "tounge in cheek" nag screen isn't too intrusive, so my advice would be.. definately download the game and see for yourself.
