The Excursions of Tom and Rose Review

Pros: Compelling worlds that keep you coming back to play, interesting story, fun, unique, well designed levels.
Cons: No innovation, graphics are a bit strange, a bit stupid at some parts of the story.
Excursions of Tom and Rose, compelling platformer.
When I looked at the screenshot of this game, before I downloaded it, I wasn't expecting much. The Excursions of Tom and Rose? It sounded like a boring name, so I assumed that the game would be boring as well. Even after I opened up the game and started playing a little, I was still thinking 'This is such a stupid game.? However, once you get over some minor things that you may notice when you first start-up the game such as how the character walks and the music of the beginning stage, you will notice that you are intrigued by this little adventure that you have been sent upon.
The game's story is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. You play as either Tom or Rose. You must navigate Tom (or Rose) through some very wonderland-ish landscapes, such as: a forest, a queen's castle, a city, and a puzzle house with many doors. Each landscape is unique, well fashioned, and well designed. The prospect of progressing to new places keeps the player wondering what is going to come next. Even though the game does implement an adventurous theme, the game is not an adventure platformer. It is an arcade platformer dressed up like an adventure platformer.
The graphics are very simple and kiddish, but the variety is impressive. There are plenty of enemies to jump on and tons of wonderful landscapes to explore. The graphics also fit together very well, what I mean by that is, the spriter does a good job of keeping everything within the same whimsical style. The sound and music also fit the game's style well. Overall, the graphics and sounds are not top notch, but they do work perfectly for this style of game.
One disappointing thing about the game is the lack of innovation. It is a great game overall, but you don't see very much that you have never seen before. You jump on the enemies, climb up ladders, collect health. Its all been done before. This is a very minor complaint, but every game needs something about it that is unique. This game, in my opinion, does not display very much new or unique stuff.
Despite the minor setback of lack of innovation, the game is still very fun. It mercilessly delivers new and amusing places to explore. You can get quite addicted to just exploring the game's colorful and interesting surroundings. But the game also delivers a punch in the gameplay department. The levels are designed very well. They are not too easy, not too hard, so you can really enjoy them no matter how good you are at platform games.
