LockOn Review
By Jabberwock on 27 June 2007

Pros: - amazing use of graphics and sound, and good gameplay.

Cons: - it's not really as intense as an arcade game should be.

First of all, I'd like to say that LockOn makes the best use of sound out of any Game Maker game I've ever played. The sound effects are weird and surreal; there really isn't any music, per se, just some weird subliminal-messagish popping and throbbing sounds in the background. Actually, the sound is a little bit frightening at first; if only because it can produce such an effect in me, I think it's great. My favorite sound effect is the one used for the level three missles. I tried to emulate it, but no luck.

The graphics are also excellent. There are plenty of weird particle effects, as with all of jph's games, and there's some excellent use of odd color combinations. Once again, my favorite effect is for the level three missles; I actually play the game just to see/hear them sometimes.

The gameplay, of course, is quite strong, this being an arcade game. However, to be honest, if the gameplay were on its own I probably wouldn't've given the game a second glance (I hated it the first time I played it). So the gameplay is good, but it's really the game's atmosphere that's exceptional. The gameplay is actually a little lacking in intensity sometimes, in my opinion.
