Booloid Review
By Jabberwock on 27 June 2007

Pros: - great graphics and music, interesting environments, and fantastic (dare I say original?) gameplay.

Cons: - not that long; it took me maybe an hour to beat.

Ingenuity? Yeah, Really!

This is one of my favorite GM games of all time. I've always been a big fan of exploration games, and weird, stylish graphics, and originality, and chiptunes (well, not always). So it stands to reason that I'd love this game.

In this game, you fly around in a neato little UFO, using a tractor beam to rescue little creatures (?) called Booleans and collect parts to upgrade your ship. As you get upgrades, your ship gets better. Funny how these things work. Anyways, I think the game is a lot of fun - more fun than it sounds. I also think the environments are pretty interesting, even though the graphics are very simple and the levels can be hard to navigate sometimes until you learn the layout, since many of them look kind of similar. This game was an inspiring factor for me in the creation of The Wasteland; it taught me things. Good things. About how simplicity isn't bad, and how even just interesting color combinations can make for an interesting game.

The music in Booloid consists of a bunch of chiptunes from various artists, a lot of them very nice songs. One of them is the same as one of the songs in Seiklus, but that's forgivable.

Anyways, I could go on all day about how great this game is, but in the end you've got to try it for yourself. I've been known to like things that no one else likes in the past, so you can't always take my word for it. You also might like it more than you think, and it's a pretty small filesize, so why not try it?

One last thing: a lot of people found this game very hard, apparently, but I think it's pretty easy. Maybe I'm just good at it. Also, if you like it, you might also like Bool; some people like it better, though I think exploration is more interesting than level-by-level play.
