Pros: clean, simple graphics, great music, and easy to pick up.
Cons: over simplistic gameplay, lack of flexible unit management.
great game, but, too simple?
upon entering the menu, the graphics are evidently shown quite nicely, nothing too jagged, everything looked smooth.
the options menu doesnt give you the options you think you should deserve from an RTS title, unable to remove shadows or configure other graphics besides the size of the window. due to this inability, the game can be quite slow, because of the excessive amount of trees one can shove into a map.
Thus we meet the level builder, a nice, little, simple forgery where you can place the [around] 22 objects of the game, though the game could use a few solid walls here and there to add to the flexibility of the type of maps you want, as I've observed that no matter how many trees and bushes you put, no matter where you put them, the AI will always stick to just charging your base, trying to march through whatever foilage or shrubbery you put in the way.
which brings me to my next big point, though the enemy AI was intelligent to a degree, they lack the aspect of strategy, attacking the nearest opponent, or when they had enough, just rush your base. the AI also seemed to be desperate, and merciless, especially when youre at the 5 difficulties and up, once theyve killed enough of your men, they have enough rank level, to create as many high level troops as they want, one by one they throw hordes of rangers at you, leaving you to rely on archers and towers made of wood, which die faster than upgraded sword fighters... regardless of the number of resources you thought you deprived them of(raiding their workers doesnt help one bit) which sort of disappoints the smarts you put into your battle strategy, all it takes to win: get stronger, higher, and faster numbers than the enemy. which is difficult above difficulty 5, the enemy likes to rush in intervals depending on their attack group's size, the more you hold off, the more money you lose, yet, bigger they get, try to save money.
ahh money, yes, the great hardship of the game. gathering gold was quite easy, you dont run out of gold from a mine, and theyre conveniently placed next to you. yet you run out of it so fast, offensive units are costly, and though youre trying to keep up by upgrading, you must sacrifice losing that special chance to buy a squad of mages or rangers(aww).
speaking of units, the game lacked quite a lot of unit types that make an RTS special, that change the tide of the war, that add to the strategy, the only difference in most of the units was how far they can kill, or how cheap they are. nothing special, no cavalry, no tiger-riding spear hunters, just your simple foot infantry in which you could upgrade their health or attack power only.
though great for its fast paced, straight-to-it action, the game couldve used some sort of tech tree, something to make it much more challenging to build your base with, yet make it funner to destroy their resources. the game itself had 4 structures, your base their base, your towers, and their towers.
and because the game lacked such complex advanced features, it made sense, this RTS does feel ancient, battles were limited to swords and arrows, however i must respect the fun simplicity of the game, sending out attack squads, setting up ambush locations, thanks to the glory of being more modern than AI thinks.
overall, it's still a great RTS, but a bit too simple and basic to have a great amount of originality or flexibility i expect from an RTS
