Teocalli - The Treasurehunt Review

Pros: Excellent art, good use of lighting, simple controls
Cons: Puzzles mostly trail-and-error that requires constant restarting , SLOOOOOOOW, unnecessary voice acting
Restart, Restart, Restart...
It's obvious that a lot of time has been put into achieving the 'ancient civilization' feel of the game, from our intrepid torch-wielding explorer to the grind of stone switches that I suppose are powered by the combined frustrations of your many restarts. Which leads me to my main complaint; none of the switches that you step on to affect the playing area have any logic to them besides 'this one raises something somewhere' and 'this one lowers something somewhere'. The only way to progress is to randomly step on stuff and restart whenever you get stuck, hopefully memorizing the pattern before your score drops too low.
Which is a shame, because the game is easy to get into in so many other ways, even if the simple controls feel unresponsive at times. I would have gladly traded the snazzy light effects for some more solid puzzle design.

Only the purple mask-switches raises some random tile (and only once) - all other tiles raises and lowers depending on the animal/color, and the way the snake/bird/frog is facing! You're speaking as if you missed some of these rules, the switches applies to. However, nice and honest review. I have to admit that, yes, I underestimated the time it would take to create good and challenging levels. Most levels were created in a rush, desperately trying to maintain a relatively long playing-time.. :S

I'm sketching ideas down for a sequel. If I ever finish a "Teocalli 2", I promise that the puzzles will be better, and mixed with more Prince of Persia-like traps and dangers.. :D
