Mario 3 Review

Pros: Power-ups, good controls

Cons: Can't crouch, Hammer Bro fire button is Enter?, interface is minimal

Not bad at all

Once again, let's go save Peach from Bowser, SMB3-style! Well, it is not said but that's we've gotta do, as always...

With the map, we travel several worlds in search of Peach. But the world map works a little weirdly. We can enter one of few levels and if we beat the good one, we can continue forward in the map. Maybe it's with the number of stars we collect, I don't know for sure. Also, there are several level #X in a map. Why? Also, when we finish a level, we have to restart to the start point in the map. A little annoying when we have to travel to farther levels.

The gameplay is pretty smooth. The only thing I don't get is why use the Enter key to throw hammers? Power-ups are basic: mushroom to grow up and the super leaf... to go down slower... I never found a way to use the tail to fly or kill enemies. Mario can get the Hammer Bros suit when he gets 100 coins. One good thing is that we can have more power-ups in this game than in several Mario clone games I've played.

The levels are pretty well designed. The graphics are good but some are static. For example, the tanks in the last world advance but the wheels are not moving. About levels, the scrolling is fast and can be annoying by times. Also, when we reach the star at the end of a level, we come back quickly to the map without an ending scene (not even a short short one). Oh well... no time to waste, I suppose...

The game provides a good range of enemies. There's no animation or sound when we kill an enemy. He just disappears. Could have been better. Bosses are pretty easy to defeat (except maybe Bowser at the end).

Once we get the hang of it, the game is interesting. I liked it. Good work.
