Jet Pod - The Quest for Inspiration Review
By Alexitrón on 14 July 2008

Pros: Sticks to the rules. A variety of Jet Pods to choose from. Creative obstacles and enemies. That crazy story.

Cons: Difficulty will prevent many players from getting their hands on bonus material. Some annoying obstacles.Same music over and over.

could this be the winner?

PROS: Darkdude's Jet Pod provides a nicely improved version of the original game with many features, levels and even a story that doesn't feel tacked in at all.You can choose from 6 different Pods that control differently to suit your skills or the situation at hand. This requires a bit of experimenting though. There are also many obstacles like turrets ,flame throwers and proximity devices? and also a variety of creatures like water monsters and fish like things that will chase you around. You also get to use portals and activate gates with switches and such. Another cool feature is how, when underwater, your pod controls differently.

CONS:The difficulty of the game goes up the slope to the point of being maybe too hard for a lot of people.I like the game and I still quited in the last area out of frustration. There are a couple of things that make the difficulty be just too much. For example there are some annoying obstacles like the water monsters, there is no sign to were this beasts are hiding so you wont know until you get eaten. There is also this fish like creatures that chase you around,is a matter of luck to get past them without getting killed by them or crashing against a wall because the pods are hard to control under water.Sure, you can change pods, but this requires trial an error so you are still going to die many times. There was also this proximity things that give no sign of how big their damage radius is meaning ,again, that you will die a lot before you get the trick.I quited in the first level of the last area,it was simply too tedious, you have to activate switches in a very narrow path, this means going back and forth in some parts, one wrong move and you die and have to start over again. After dying a lot you just want to punch your monitor and bite your keyboard and eat your mouse and...well....is just not good. The problem is that since I didn't make it to the end,I never get to see what the bonuses are and I'm sure a lot of people will have the same problem.I'm not saying is impossible , I'm just saying that is harder than it needs to be.

Overall you can definitely see that darkdude went all out for this competition, providing a funny story, many pods, and 4 different areas with their own theme , obstacles and/or enemies to up the challenge. Sadly the challenge gets too high and may prevent many players from enjoying all the game has to offer. Good job darkdude.

Note:Graphics were not important for this competition but this game is nicely presented with four different areas with their own theme.Enemies and obstacles are based on these themes so it all fits really well together. The mini game i got to play uses cool trippy graphics too.
Also,is good to have music but is best to have the option to turn it off. Specially if it repeats over and over.

Thanks for the detailed review. ^_^
In the next version I'll change the hard levels, making them less frustrating, and make a level pack that you can unlock after beating the game. I'll include all the hard levels in it as an extra challenge. I'm also thinking of adding extra music...
