Caveman Craig Review

Pros: Fancy graphics. Well-chosen humorous sounds. Easily understandable gameplay. Nice and smooth development in difficulty (only in v. 1.4 though). Great humorous tutorial.
Cons: Version 1.5 is too hard (available for download on the game website). There isn't really a story. Cavemen are unbelievably stupid – even for cavemen. Game starts lagging a lot after a while. Could be developed further.
Excellent prehistoric fun
The overall aim in this game is to assist a (relatively) clever caveman named Craig, in his task to build and breed the biggest and most powerful tribe in the prehistoric lands. In order to do this he must slay various enemies, gather food and most importantly - breed more cavemen to assist him.
To begin with, the tribe consists of only one person; Craig - who will (of course) be played by you. But in a matter of minutes, you will find yourself surrounded by caveman buddies who can help with your daily routines. Luckily - breeding new cavemen is not as complicated as in real life. All you have to do in this game, is gather enough food for one more caveman and *pling* - you are just one click away from a new pair of hands. When breeding new cavemen you have a choice of three types: hunters, gatherers and preparers. The hunters will help you kill enemies and eatable creatures, the gatherers will help you collect berries and drag carcasses into the cave and the preparers - well... they will prepare your food. Prioritize and combine your cavemen right in order to stay alive and become the greatest tribe in the country.
"That sounds pretty easy!" you might say. Well then, you are about to find out that being a caveman is harder than you thought. Because in this game, the only key to survival is to create a fully functional and powerful caveman tribe. And in order to do this, you must be persistent, quick-thinking and tactically clever. Because when all your gatherers have been eaten by a T-rex and your preparers have been stoned to death by some obnoxious rival cavemen, then what are you going to do? Call your hunters? Well I wouldn’t count on them, ‘cause they’re busy being thrown around and shredded to pieces by prehistoric monsters. So you see – being a caveman is not a simple job.
Personally, I loved this game. Caveman Craig has it all; action, thrill, strategy, violence, a whole lot of blood and a T-rex. But as for all other games, this has some downsides too. These are listed below.
- The version 1.5 that is available for download on the Caveman Craig website is way too hard. You barely get to breed a couple of hunters before your whole tribe is being torn apart by monsters and rival cavemen who almost seem to be working together. One should get a chance to get properly started before the massive attack waves begin.
- The gatherers should have some kind of intelligence feature, meaning that when huge battles takes place outside the cave or when the T-rex shows his ugly face, they should be hiding inside with the preparers instead of just running towards their own doom. I’m getting pretty sick of losing all my gatherers every time there is an attack, even when I have like 40-50 hunters. Another way to solve this problem could be to give the gatherers the ability to defend themselves like the hunters - since they are also working outside the cave in the dangerous wilderness.
- As for the same with the hunters. They should somehow be able to divide into groups instead of all hunters focusing on the same target. Rival cavemen are stoning my preparers to death in the cave, even though my army of hunters is massive – the problem is, they are all busy killing off a raptor or two in the other end of the map.
- I don’t know if you can fix this last problem or if it’s just my computer that sucks. But the game starts lagging like hell when you are really making progress. When my tribe consists of around 50-60 cavemen it’s almost impossible for me to continue playing, since the screen is practically frozen. So far I have tried the game on two computers with the same result.
I think that this game could be developed a whole lot more. Even though it is practically flawless, it has infinite possibilities of further development. But since I know that you are working on a sequel, I won’t complain about that. =)
All in all, I still think that this game is great. And it deserves at least five stars, since it is so detailed, well thought and addictive! Thumbs up!
