Realm of Monsters III - An Aedious Opinion
Realm of Monsters III by chicken
In a bizarre turn of events, a young student of the magic arts named Kaine is thrust into the thick of things when the Ganados invaded the school and stole the Gem of Life, along with the Guardian of the Gem, Cecilia. It is now up to Kaine to use his magical abilities to rescue Cecilia, recover the Gem of Life, and defeat the Ganados.
The graphics are not bad, this I have to admit, but they're definitely not good. Most, if not all, of the sprites, tiles, and backgrounds used are taken directly from the RPG Maker 2000 RTP with little to no modification. There are a few unique and original pieces of eye candy, but they are either few and far between or insignificant graphically speaking. Some examples of this include the health and magic bars, as well as the damage counters and the HUD cursor.
Realm of Monsters III has your typical top-down RPG gameplay. You move around using the standard WASD control scheme and aim using the mouse. You can shoot magic at enemies by clicking the left mouse button. You can use a special attack or switch between magics by using the right mouse button. One of the most unique features, though, is the inclusion of a Spell Creation system. You can utilize this system by obtaining special codes throughout the game.
As with the graphics, most of the sounds used in the game are taken directly from the RPG Maker 2000 RTP. Even then, they're fairly low quality and consist mainly of various beeps and whooshes.
Thankfully, most of the music used in the game isn't from the RPG Maker 2000 RTP. However, they're fairly simple, although that's a personal gripe and doesn't take away from the gameplay. Occasionally, the music will skip on some machines, my own included. Again, this is a minor gripe and most people shouldn't experience this problem.
Realm of Monsters III is a fairly decent game. However, it lacks long term playability, and you'll find yourself getting bored with it frequently. This can be contributed to the lack of originality in various fields of game design, and aside from the interesting Spell Creator feature, there just isn't much here to get you hooked.
