Victory Story Review

Pros: Nice graphics, decent upgrading-system and cool menu with many options.
Cons: Ripped music (cool though it may be) and nearly no other sounds, little differentiation in the enemies, except for the bosses. The fire-button might have to be relocated, as it's hard to reach.
Blast-em-away
In this game you have to destroy the alien fleet by firing rockets at the enemy ships. You can buy upgrades and items as you go.
You can choose between a campaign, an arcade (100 seconds of pure blast-em-away-fun) and a not-yet-working 2-player deathmatch. You can also choose between two main weapons; rockets (aim with mouse) or bombs (heavier, but only straight ahead).
The graphics are quite nice. I learned from the help-file that they were mainly downloaded from the site, but that's what the resources are there for, isn't it?
The sounds consist of two sounds:
- The Halo-background music
- The boss-explosion sound
But if the other actions had sounds, these would probably be repeated so many times they'd get boring.
As for the gameplay, I was quite amused, though it could have been better, I assume. The amount of enemies is large and there are not that many types, only three, if I remember well, excluding the bosses.
I liked the fact that you could upgrade your ship and buy items, but I think they were a bit too cheap. Either that, or I just made too much money :)
I didn't have the feeling that things got a lot harder during the next levels. I just kept firing and moving about. Maybe the game should start easier and become harder as you go. The difficulty is really decided by the amount of upgrades you earned. That's good, but I just didn't feel any difference in the difficulty once I got the 2-rockets-upgrade. I never even had to use the health. There are other ways of making the game harder than just increasing the amount of enemies...
I'd say it's hard at the beginning, but it gets a bit too easy after the first level, because 2-rocket-upgrade enables you to splatter the opponents like flies.
The story is nice. I'm not sure if all the names have been derived from Halo, or something, I played that game, but I'm no specialist at the matter. I was surprised by the way it was written. I think you're good at story-telling, but you might have been able to think of a more original story?
The interface is good; you can even change the keyboard-settings to azerty (thank you very much). There's only one strange setting; the fire-button is button V. This is quite hard when you have to use both the WASD-buttons and the mouse. Why not make the LMB fire the rockets? An option is to change the settings to use cannons instead, which don't require the mouse and are more effective than rockets, I think.
It's really a nice game. If it's your first complete game, you're on your way to become a great Game Maker!
