Ambush in Sector 9 Review

Pros: Decent sprite work, good music and sound effects. Highly playable and quite frantic. Very addictive gameplay.
Cons: Looking a little old and dated now due mostly to the GM version it was created with and perhaps not enough varied game modes, but the sequel out soon really goes to town in both aspects
Aging but still top quality shoot 'em up
Before this game came out my favorite GM shooter was the (still very good) Space Oddity but one play of this and I had a new fave shoot 'em up. A single screen arena shooter, with you piloting the ship's direction and rotation though the shooting is automatic and makes sense for this game.
Graphics are well done though now looking a tad worn though I still prefer it to the more abstract shoot 'em up graphics which seem to be everywhere in recent years. Limitations of Game Maker 5 (this game was made several years ago now) meant flashy effects came with a major speed loss so aren't used much here, but don't detract from the addictive gameplay, and the satisfying feel of clearing each wave of enemies. At times the tension of getting surrounded by the bad guy ships and trying to blast your way to safety reminded me of my favorite arcade game Robotron which is a great thing.
This for me is a true GM classic and still the most playable and fun shoot 'em up made in Game Maker (and my favorite including other PC shooters made in other languages) along with Pug's other games The Pyramid and the upcoming sequel to this very game Return To Sector 9 (if the demo versions of R2S9 I've played are anything to go by).
