Super Smash Battle 3D Review
By xCRILLZx on 12 April 2008

Pros: Pulling off combos & specials and watching my opponents' health go down quickly >=) ; Mario's special combo, of course, hehe; Camera holds out well; Mauling opponents violently with the attack button is a thrill to do for some reason, lol.

Cons: Repeatedly pressing the same attack button and watching the "special meter" not move; Only Mario and Sonic are the CPU's that are pitted against the player; Not much to do rather than use those two attack buttons and fight two CPU's...

Great Early Demo

This game has a lot of great potential going for it, but it would be more understandable if this were called a beta (i mean you don't figure this out until you read the help file). The fighting is actually pretty funny at times when you corner your opponent. While doing this, you can use one of the three green bars next to your health to pull off a special if you're not performing an action or if the character is responsive enough for this to happen. If you're using Mario, try playing the Holy Summit stage and get one of the CPU's against the right wall and pull off a special and then keep punching them. This is about the best thing there is to do in the game so far as I can see.

Graphics: While some of the stages seem to be pulled straight from the Sonic Battle game (along with the menu and some other things), this doesn't seem to be such a big issue. Every stage has the appropriate collisions for walking into walls. The game's camera holds out fairly well and didn't hinder the gameplay at all. Running through the little flower fields was nice, hehe.

Sound: The menu music is used as the fighting music because it doesn't stop when moving on to a battle, which kind of sucks. The punching sounds are basic but aren't all that annoying. Same with the grunts the characters make when hit. There isn't that much to hear from the characters in this game other than when you select your character. The sounds can also be expanded as well as the fighting.

Gameplay: The fighting is fun for the ten minutes or so I played and tested it out. If you want to get technical, which I should, the fighting is very buggy. For instance, if you are too close to an opponent, you will sometimes not be able to land an attack even though that attack should be hurting that person. Furthermore, when playing I noticed the "special meter" does not go up at all when fighting. Because only one person can play this game, there isn't much reason to keep the fight going when the this meter is gone, because the thrill of the fight here is to unleash hordes of punches and then maybe use the special. I repeatedly restarted the match when using a special and missing my opponent because it went right through instead of hitting that opponent. As an improvement, I would suggest making this bar fill up twice as fast when not moving, and go as fast as it does now when fighting. This way the player can keep the momentum up and, thus, make for a better fighting game. And for the second point, fix the collisions. Like I said, this game has a lot going for it, but it has a lot that needs to be fixed.

To move on, I would also like to say that the AI is a bit off, but this is (hopefully) a beta and I would assume it is, so there isn't much to expect for this point in time. To make it brief, my opponents either attacked me repeatedly or attacked the air a few inches above my character... which was weird, lol. =|

Story: Story mode isn't available so I won't put anything in this spot. (N/A)

Interface: The interface was great! Every time I pressed Escape, I got a message asking me to go back to the menu/quit the game. Also, the menu itself works well. As for the gameplay, I read that a certain bug gets your character stuck in a wall. While improvements are possible here, I am perfectly fine with how the game is set up. Training, though, is absolutely useless here. Putting customizable drones in Training Mode would suffice. No errors were found while playing this game.

Overall, it's difficult not to give this a 4-star rating because the game isn't really called a beta, doesn't give much for the player to do, and is pretty buggy. Then again, there are things that make this game rather than break it. Such as the comboing that is done for the attack button. But for what it is, this game is definitely worth checking back to once in a while to see how its process is going. If the bugs were omitted and the fighting were expanded (along with a lot of the functionality that isn't available yet), this would be well-worth keeping on my desktop. Until that time comes, I await the full version.

Another use(less)full review. Man, a game like this don't need a story. But actually you're half right!
