Ozzie's Quest Review
By JimWhiteheadUCSC on
19 March 2008
Pros: Devilishly hard puzzles that, nevertheless, seem like they should be easy. Quirky artistic style and storyline. Easy to learn, will keep you coming back for more. Judged best game out of appx. 140 games created in a large introductory game design class
Cons: Artistic style somewhat unpolished. Puzzles can be frustrating at times (but that's the nature of puzzles)
Great puzzles, quirky style
In Ozzie's Quest you play the role of a diminutive hero in a landscape full of large, spooky monsters. Armed only with your wits, bow, and axe, you solve a series of puzzles to progress from level to level. In between levels, the story of the game is told in a hand-drawn comic style.
This game was created for an introduction to game design class taught at UC Santa Cruz in Winter 2008. A panel of three game industry judges picked this game as the best one, out of the appx. 125 Game Maker games created during the quarter (it was a big class). The judges liked the difficulty of the puzzles, and the intuitiveness of the interface. They also mentioned that, while the puzzles were challenging, it always seemed like they should be solvable. That is, while the puzzles were hard to solve, they never had the feeling of being "stuck" -- there was always something else to try.
