Sonic 'N Tails 3 & Knuckles Demo Review
By TD on 29 May 2007

Pros: Graphics, special moves

Cons: Music is too loud, some glitches

Sonic 'n Tails & Knuckles - preview

If you're a Sonic fan, you'll probably remember SonicRspeed's first games: the Sonic 'N Tails series. As we all know they are just tutorial edits and they weren't that good. The character always runned to the edge of the view, the zones were confusing and the enemies weren't that easy to avoid/kill.
But we all have to start somewhere, right? I used to copy pieces of the engine from the tutorial as well. But after a while we all get better.

Still, there is a problem. You have creators like Polyphony Digital (the creator of the Gran Turismo series). When they create a game, it takes months/years to finish it and when it is finished, they've created a masterpiece. Then you have creators like EA Games. They create a lot of games in a very short time, but none of them isn't that great as Polyphony Digital's games. I guess we all know what kind of creator SonicRspeed is. :) (And if you don't, it's the second one.)

This doesn't mean that his games sucks. I even liked Sonic Blast in Time, but, just like this one, it suffers from some bugs.
Let's take a look at this game. When entering the first act I noticed that the music is too loud. (I'm using a headphone and even when the volume is almost completely turned down, it's still too loud.) This means that you almost can't hear the sound effects. But of course it's still a demo, so you can fix this. :)

The graphics are great because they are all ripped from original games. This time SonicRspeed has used sprites from the GBA games. I prefer the sprites from the genesis games, but everyone has his own taste.
The engine does the job quite well and there are even some special moves: Tails can fly, Knuckles can climb on walls and stuff... I guess the engine is based on the GBA games because the characters move very fast. (Once again, I prefer the engine from the genesis games. :) ) But since they move so fast, it all feels a bit glitchy. And I was quite disappointed when I saw that you can't lose your rings anymore. If you hit an enemy or something, you'll die and lose a live.

Another thing: I saw that you tried to let the background move with the character in act 2. Nice attempt, but it shouldn't follow the character, but it should follow the view. :) Keep trying to find the right code! I've done the same thing. ;) (And I even might give you the code if you'll help me with something... :P )

Overall, the game is worth downloading. There are still some glitches, bugs and stuff, but we may not forget this is still a demo. I'm sure most of it will be fixed in the finished game. :) SonicRspeed, since you've created a lot of games, you'll probably have quite a lot of experience with Game Maker. Keep improving this demo and I'm sure that the finished game will kick ass! ;)

Ps: please finish/improve Sonic Blast in Time! I really liked that game. :P
