the purpose is to get it back into the solved state, which is whatever you specify it to be. Thats what the colors are for. when you scramble the puzzle it mixes up the colors.

its a good minigame. your art is great, and makes up for them somewhat shallow gameplay. i found it hard to figure out which buttons were which for the wasd keys. I kept thinking 'd' meant down so it got a little frustrating.
