all u did was change the sprites. u can attack from across the room. i suggest u make a seperate object that shoots itself from the player when ur can_shoot variable is true. but will destroy itself in a fraction of a second, and dameging the the enemy when it hits it. its how iv always done melee weapons and it works in both 2d and 3d
