This is a great game. Not only is it very well designed, but it also sports a very clean interface and the graphics style is great in terms of shooting for the Atari 2600 style. I really had a good time playing it. 4/5 for your first game!

Fun little game! And it has a nice concept, too. I also liked the retro art style that you went for with it. The only suggestions I have are to implement more sounds (such as when collecting items or losing ships), adding a delay to respawning after dying, and I also noticed that, as my ship was being destroyed, I wasn't actually losing any lives! All in all, however, this is a fun game. Good job!

The game has an awesome idea behind it and I really like the music, but unfortunately the platforming elements don't work all that well (the ball gets stuck in odd places and doesn't move right, it seems) and the game takes far, far too long to load. This is probably because of the music involved. I find that it's often helpful to find a good song and make a short loop out of it rather than including a full-length song, which takes too long to load for browser-based games in most cases.

You should design the character so that the "up ladder" sprite shows ONLY when both of these conditions are met: A. Player is positioned on ladder, and B. Player is holding the UP key. The way you have it designed in which the "up ladder" sprite shows even when you just pass by a ladder just doesn't work well at all. Also, the collision detection was pretty bad. It was a chore just maneuvering through the environments. (Getting stuck, etc.) Overall: Neat idea, but poor execution.
