I had no problem controlling the chars... If it was easy, it wouldn't be a good game, it has never been easy to control Mario Kart chars. MY problem was unlocking chars, I beat all four cups with Luigi... it unlocked Waluigi, I then beat all 4 cups with Mario AND Waluigi and nothing else unlocked... So until I figure out what the hell I gotta do to get new chars I'm done.
It's a great game though, by far the best game I've played on YoYo so far.
